The Adirondacks, and especially Lake Placid, are home to some of America’s first golf courses. Founded and recognized by the USTA in 1898, golf was played informally in Lake Placid at places like the Whiteface Club & Resort since 1896 or 1897. This history of golf in Lake Placid makes it a special experience that the avid golfer should not miss.
Some of the top courses in the Adirondack High Peaks were designed by golf’s elite athletes, including Craig Wood who won the US Open and the Masters in the same year – he designed the course here in Lake Placid that bears his name. During the 1930s, John Van Kleek, in consultation with Walter Hagen redesigned and expanded the original course at the Whiteface Club & Resort into one of the finest in the east. The Saranac Inn Golf Club has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of the four US courses 100 years or older to receive four and a half stars. The course at Westport Country Club is more than 100 years old and is acknowledged to be the “Adirondack’s Finest”.
This rich golf history and exceptional course design coupled with the magnificent beauty of the Adirondack High Peaks merge to create a one of a kind golf experience. These public courses offer beginners and experts the beauty of wooded mountain courses with Scottish links – several have Executive Length Holes and all are around par 72.
